In the year it played at home
It is official: Portuguese tourism has won 15 awards at the 25th Gala of the World Travel Awards, the most important awards in the sector worldwide.
The ceremony took place on December 1st, 2018 at the Pátio da Galé in Lisbon, which was a debut of a Portuguese city as host of the WTA.
For the second consecutive year, Portugal won the great prize for best tourist destination, a distinction that helps strengthen the country’s position in international tourism. Portugal won the world´s best destination Prize!!
Last year the country had won this prize, having been the first in Europe to win it after defeating competitors such as Brazil, Greece, Maldives, USA, Morocco, Vietnam or Spain.
Lisbon and other winners
Lisbon as well had been voted Best City Destination in Europe and now manages to win this same prize, but worldwide and for the first time, confirming the Portuguese capital as a global tourist destination to take into account.
The capital still returns to win Best City Break, a prize delivered to destinations that are also ideal for short stays. The Madeira Island won the prize for Word´s Leading Island Destination!
Among the great national winners are the Passadiços do Paiva, an infrastructure that is integrated in Arouca Geopark, a territory with 328 square kilometers, recognized by UNESCO as a Geological Heritage of Humanity, Won Best Touristic Adventure Attraction in the World.
Sintra Parks, the manager of several parks, palaces, and gardens in the region, returned to win the prize of World’s Best Company in Conservation in this edition of the World Travel Awards.
The Magazine of Tap, Up, also won the title of Best Online Magazine, similar to last year. Tap also won Europe´s Leading Airline to Africa 2018 and Europe´s Leading Airline to South America 2018.
The Hotel Joya (Best Hotel Restaurant), the Corinthia Hotel (Best Urban Hotel), the Olissippo Lapa Palace Hotel (Best Classic Hotel) and the Conrad Hotel (Best Luxury and Leisure Resort) are among the renowned Portuguese hotels.
Who votes for this awards?
The awards are the result of the general public voting in hundreds of nominations, but especially of the one that is made by 200 thousand professionals of the tourism industry, representatives of 160 countries.
The World Travel Awards were created to distinguish ‘best examples of good practice in the tourism sector on a global scale‘ and ‘in order to stimulate the competitiveness and quality of tourism’.
Congratulations to Portugal
The strength of Portugal’s tourism economy was reflected with victories in a range of categories.
Remember Portugal won ‘World’s Leading Destination’, Madeira heralded ‘World’s Leading Island Destination’, whilst Turismo de Portugal was named ‘World’s Leading Tourist Board’.
Other highlights included awards for Hong Kong (‘World’s Leading Business Travel Destination’), Cape Town (‘World’s Leading Festival & Event Destination’), Guayaquil (‘World’s Leading City Tourist Board’), Europcar (‘World’s Leading Green Transport Solution Company’ and ‘World’s Leading Car Rental Company Website’), Norwegian Cruise Line (‘World’s Leading Cruise Line’) and YAS Waterworld (‘World’s Leading Water Park’).
Hundreds of the leading travel industries figureheads from across the globe attended the ceremony at Pátio da Galé, Lisbon’s landmark events and entertainment venue.
